Sense and Sensibility: Women in Antiquity
After a year or more of closed doors and video meetings it was our joy and privilege to open Sense and Sensibility, an exhibit showcasing works that portray iconic women from the classical period. Opened during Women’s History Month, the exhibition continues until May 14.
The artworks we gathered in our new 5th Avenue gallery range across various ancient societies and date from the 10th century BC to the 4th century AD, giving a wide picture of women within those societies and the roles they played.
In these times when people are trying to return to normalcy, there is no experience that says New York more than browsing a gallery. This is the first time Phoenix Ancient Art has welcomed in-person visitors in 2021.
Some of the pieces on display include a Palmyran Limestone Polychrome Relief Bust of a Noblewoman and Child (2nd-3rd c. A.D), an Egyptian Faience Amulet of the Goddess Bastet (10th-8th c. B.C.), a Greek marble Head of Queen Arsinoe II, (3rd c. B.C.), as a Roman Mosaic of Tethys and a Tarantine Terracotta Plaque with Fighting Athena (4th c. B.C.).
